Cell Specialization & Tissues
Name: Period: Date:
1.Cells are filled with cytoplasm and organelles, each with specific functions
2.Gene expression controlled by chemical signals determines cell type
3.Genes are discrete units; dominant/recessive patterns determine expression
4.Mutations can be beneficial, harmful, or neutral depending on context
[!] STUDY GUIDE: Big Ideas Use to answer form questions!
1.Cells specialize to do specific jobs. Even though all cells have the same DNA, they "turn on" different genes to become muscle, nerve, skin, or other cell types.
2.Structure matches function. A cell's shape and organelles are designed for its job (nerve cells are long for signals, muscle cells contract).
3.Cells organize into levels. Similar cells form tissues, tissues form organs, organs form systems, systems make an organism.
Cells -> Tissues -> Organs -> Organ Systems -> Organism
LEVELS OF ORGANIZATION: From Cells to Whole Organisms
[#] KEY TERMS Define in YOUR words
Specialized Cell
A cell with a specific job
Tissue
A group of similar cells working together
Organ
Multiple tissues working together
Organ System
Group of organs with a shared func…
[?] THE PHENOMENON Write BEFORE Hook form
Why do different body parts look and act so differently if they all came from one cell?
Your brain cells look completely different from your muscle cells or skin cells. Yet they all came from the same fertilized egg and have the exact same DNA. How is that possible?
