[!] STUDY GUIDE: Big Ideas
Use to answer form questions!
1.Heredity is the passing of traits from parents to
offspring.
Your traits come from genetic information passed down through
chromosomes.
2.Chromosomes carry genes, and genes come in different versions
called alleles.
You inherit one allele from each parent for each trait.
3.Dominant alleles mask recessive alleles. A
dominant trait shows up with just one copy; recessive traits need
two copies to appear.

Define in YOUR words
Gene
Section of DNA coding for a trait
Allele
Different versions of the same gene
Dominant
Trait that shows with one copy
Recessive
Trait that needs two copies to show

Write BEFORE Hook form
Why do some siblings look alike while others look completely
different?
Some brothers and sisters could pass for twins, while others look
nothing alike. They have the same parents - so how can this happen?

How does gene expression (W3) connect to heredity? Why can siblings
with the same genes look different?
Why don't traits blend like mixing paint colors?

Q1 (NEW):
Use a Punnett square to predict: If both parents are Bb (brown eyes
dominant, blue recessive), what are the possible offspring?
Q2 (SPIRAL - W3):
How does gene expression explain why cells with the same DNA can
make different proteins?
Q3 (INTEGRATION):
How do chromosomes pass traits to offspring? Explain in your own
words using the terms: gene, allele, and chromosome.
