Teacher Monitoring Guide
Grade 7 · Cycle 2 · Week 3 — Energy in Chemical
Reactions
Learning Goal
Students will classify chemical reactions as endothermic or exothermic
based on energy flow, and explain how bond breaking and forming relate to
energy release or absorption.
Station Checkpoints
Station 1 — Hook & Phenomenon
Look for: Students connecting the phenomenon to prior knowledge and
generating testable questions
Common misconception: Exothermic reactions make energy from nothing —
clarify that energy is released from chemical bonds, not created
Station 2 — Investigation / Data Collection
Look for: Accurate data recording and identification of emerging
patterns in the evidence
Common misconception: All reactions need heat to start — distinguish
activation energy (needed to start) from overall energy change
(exothermic vs. endothermic)
Station 3 — Sense-Making
Look for: Students revising their model based on evidence collected
during investigation
Common misconception: Cold packs destroy energy — reinforce conservation
of energy; endothermic reactions absorb energy from surroundings, not
eliminate it

For students scoring below 10 pts on the exit ticket: use the sentence
frames below during the next class's hook.
- "I notice that _____ because _____."
- "The evidence shows _____, which means _____."
