Teacher Monitoring Guide
Grade 7 · Cycle 4 · Week 4 — Nitrogen Cycle &
Agriculture
Learning Goal
Students will trace nitrogen through the nitrogen cycle (fixation,
nitrification, assimilation, denitrification) and evaluate how
agricultural practices disrupt nitrogen cycling and affect water quality.
Station Checkpoints
Station 1 — Hook & Phenomenon
Look for: Students connecting the phenomenon to prior knowledge and
generating testable questions
Common misconception: Nitrogen in fertilizer comes from nature directly
— explain industrial nitrogen fixation (Haber-Bosch process) and how
this has dramatically altered the global nitrogen cycle
Station 2 — Investigation / Data Collection
Look for: Accurate data recording and identification of emerging
patterns in the evidence
Common misconception: Nitrogen fertilizer that washes away is just
wasted money — connect nitrate runoff to algal blooms, dead zones, and
drinking water contamination
Station 3 — Sense-Making
Look for: Students revising their model based on evidence collected
during investigation
Common misconception: Organic farming uses no nitrogen — clarify that
organic farms use natural nitrogen sources (manure, legumes) that still
contribute to nitrogen loading if mismanaged

For students scoring below 10 pts on the exit ticket: use the sentence
frames below during the next class's hook.
- "I notice that _____ because _____."
- "The evidence shows _____, which means _____."
