Teacher Monitoring Guide
Grade 8 · Cycle 1 · Week 3 — Thermal Properties of
Materials
Learning Goal
Students will analyze data on specific heat capacity, thermal
conductivity, and thermal expansion to explain and predict how different
materials respond to heating and cooling in engineering applications.
Station Checkpoints
Station 1 — Hook & Phenomenon
Look for: Students connecting the phenomenon to prior knowledge and
generating testable questions
Common misconception: All metals conduct heat equally well — compare
specific thermal conductivity values for copper, aluminum, steel, and
stainless steel using data tables
Station 2 — Investigation / Data Collection
Look for: Accurate data recording and identification of emerging
patterns in the evidence
Common misconception: Thermal expansion is only important in extreme
conditions — connect bridge expansion joints, gaps in railroad tracks,
and bimetallic strips in thermostats to everyday relevance
Station 3 — Sense-Making
Look for: Students revising their model based on evidence collected
during investigation
Common misconception: Materials with high specific heat always feel
hotter — distinguish thermal capacity from perceived warmth; metal feels
colder not because it is colder but because it conducts heat away faster

For students scoring below 10 pts on the exit ticket: use the sentence
frames below during the next class's hook.
- "I notice that _____ because _____."
- "The evidence shows _____, which means _____."
