Energy Transfer in Collisions
Name: Period: Date:
1.Only thermal energy transfers; 'cold' is absence of thermal energy
2.Temperature measures average kinetic energy; heat is energy transfer
3.Metals conduct heat faster, so they feel cold by drawing heat from your hand
4.Energy is conserved; it transforms between forms but total amount stays constant
[!] STUDY GUIDE: Big Ideas Use to answer form questions!
1.Energy transfers between objects during collisions. When objects collide, kinetic energy moves from one object to another.
2.Elastic collisions conserve kinetic energy. Objects bounce apart with the same total KE. Inelastic collisions convert some KE to other forms (sound, heat, deformation).
3.Total energy is ALWAYS conserved. Even when KE decreases, the energy goes somewhere (thermal, sound, etc.) - it doesn't disappear!
Ball A Moving -> COLLISION -> Energy Transfer -> Ball B Moving
ELASTIC: KE conserved | INELASTIC: Some KE -> thermal/sound
[#] KEY TERMS Define in YOUR words
Collision
Objects hitting each other
Elastic
Bouncy - KE conserved
Inelastic
Not bouncy - some KE lost
Energy Transfer
Energy moving between objects
[?] THE PHENOMENON Write BEFORE Hook form
Why do billiard balls sometimes stop completely after collision?
When a cue ball hits another ball head-on, it often stops dead while the other ball rolls away. Where did the cue ball's energy go?
