Teacher Monitoring Guide
Grade 8 · Cycle 1 · Week 7 — Energy Systems &
Conservation
Learning Goal
Students will trace energy flow through multi-step conversion systems,
calculate efficiency, and evaluate energy conservation strategies using
systems thinking and quantitative data.
Station Checkpoints
Station 1 — Hook & Phenomenon
Look for: Students connecting the phenomenon to prior knowledge and
generating testable questions
Common misconception: 100% efficient machines are theoretically possible
— introduce the second law of thermodynamics conceptually; all real
energy conversions produce some waste heat
Station 2 — Investigation / Data Collection
Look for: Accurate data recording and identification of emerging
patterns in the evidence
Common misconception: Renewable energy is always more efficient than
fossil fuels — compare efficiency values across multiple energy
technologies and emphasize that efficiency is one of many factors in
energy analysis
Station 3 — Sense-Making
Look for: Students revising their model based on evidence collected
during investigation
Common misconception: Saving energy at home has negligible global impact
— use cumulative impact calculations to connect individual household
choices to aggregate national/global energy demand

For students scoring below 10 pts on the exit ticket: use the sentence
frames below during the next class's hook.
- "I notice that _____ because _____."
- "The evidence shows _____, which means _____."
