STUDY GUIDE: Big Ideas
Use to answer form questions
1.Newton's First Law (Inertia): An object at rest stays at rest, and an object in motion keeps moving at constant speed in a straight line, unless an outside force acts on it — this is why you lurch forward when a car brakes suddenly.
2.Newton's Second Law (F = ma): The acceleration of an object depends on the net force applied and the object's mass — doubling the force doubles the acceleration, but doubling the mass cuts acceleration in half.
3.Action-Reaction Force Pairs: Every force has an equal and opposite partner acting on a different object — when you push a wall, the wall pushes back on you with the same force (Newton's Third Law).
4.Propulsion and Newton's Third Law: Rockets, jets, and even swimming all work by pushing matter in one direction so the reaction force pushes the object the opposite way — the exhaust goes down, the rocket goes up.
