Teacher Monitoring Guide
Grade 8 · Cycle 2 · Week 3 — Force Pairs &
Systems
Learning Goal
Students will identify Newton's Third Law force pairs in complex
scenarios, analyze system diagrams to determine net force on each object,
and apply these concepts to collision and propulsion problems.
Station Checkpoints
Station 1 — Hook & Phenomenon
Look for: Students connecting the phenomenon to prior knowledge and
generating testable questions
Common misconception: The ground pushes up with less force when you are
standing still — clarify that the normal force exactly equals the
applied gravitational force when stationary; this is what 'balanced'
means
Station 2 — Investigation / Data Collection
Look for: Accurate data recording and identification of emerging
patterns in the evidence
Common misconception: A truck and a bug hit each other with different
forces — Newton's Third Law is absolute: both experience exactly equal
and opposite forces; the difference is how each system responds (mass
difference)
Station 3 — Sense-Making
Look for: Students revising their model based on evidence collected
during investigation
Common misconception: Rockets need air to push against — demonstrate
reaction propulsion in a vacuum using momentum conservation; the rocket
exhaust carries momentum in one direction, rocket in the other

For students scoring below 10 pts on the exit ticket: use the sentence
frames below during the next class's hook.
- "I notice that _____ because _____."
- "The evidence shows _____, which means _____."
