Teacher Monitoring Guide
Grade 8 · Cycle 2 · Week 4 — Forces, Work & Energy Integration

Learning Goal

Students will apply the work-energy theorem to connect force application to energy transfer, calculate mechanical advantage in simple machines, and analyze real-world systems using both force and energy frameworks.

Station Checkpoints

Station 1 — Hook & Phenomenon
Look for: Students connecting the phenomenon to prior knowledge and generating testable questions
Common misconception: Simple machines can multiply both force and energy — clarify the trade-off: machines that multiply force do so over a longer distance; energy input always equals energy output in an ideal machine
Station 2 — Investigation / Data Collection
Look for: Accurate data recording and identification of emerging patterns in the evidence
Common misconception: Work is done whenever a force is applied — emphasize the displacement requirement in the definition of work; holding a heavy box stationary does no mechanical work even though it feels effortful
Station 3 — Sense-Making
Look for: Students revising their model based on evidence collected during investigation
Common misconception: Power and energy are the same concept — distinguish energy (capacity to do work, measured in joules) from power (rate of energy transfer, measured in watts)
