Teacher Monitoring Guide
Grade 8 · Cycle 4 · Week 3 — Matter Cycling &
Decomposition
Learning Goal
Students will trace the movement of carbon, nitrogen, and other elements
through ecosystems via decomposition, and explain how detritivores and
decomposers connect dead matter to nutrient cycling.
Station Checkpoints
Station 1 — Hook & Phenomenon
Look for: Students connecting the phenomenon to prior knowledge and
generating testable questions
Common misconception: Decomposers are less important than producers and
consumers — quantify the biomass and rate of nutrient release by
decomposers to show their critical role in cycling
Station 2 — Investigation / Data Collection
Look for: Accurate data recording and identification of emerging
patterns in the evidence
Common misconception: Decomposition is just rotting — distinguish the
roles of physical weathering, detritivores (physical breakdown), and
decomposers (chemical breakdown to inorganic forms)
Station 3 — Sense-Making
Look for: Students revising their model based on evidence collected
during investigation
Common misconception: Nutrients cycle instantly through ecosystems — use
residence time data to show nutrients can be locked in wood, peat, or
deep sediment for decades to millennia

For students scoring below 10 pts on the exit ticket: use the sentence
frames below during the next class's hook.
- "I notice that _____ because _____."
- "The evidence shows _____, which means _____."
