REFSTUDY GUIDE: Big IdeasUse to answer form questions
1.Electromagnets: Electric current flowing through a coil of wire creates a magnetic field. Adding an iron core concentrates the field. More coil turns or more current = stronger electromagnet. Disconnect the battery and the magnetism disappears instantly.
2.Electromagnetic Induction: A changing magnetic field through a coil generates electric current (Faraday's discovery). A stationary magnet inside a coil produces zero current. Faster motion, more coil turns, or a stronger magnet all increase the induced current.
3.Motors & Generators: A motor converts electrical energy into motion using an armature, permanent magnets, and a commutator that flips the current each half-turn. A generator reverses this — spinning a magnet near a coil converts motion into electricity. Same science, opposite direction.
DRAWKEY TERMSGoogle each → Images tab → sketch what you see
Electromagnet
A magnet created by electric current flowing through a coil of wire
Solenoid
A coil of wire that acts like a bar magnet when current flows through it
EM Induction
Creating electric current by moving a magnet through or near a coil of wire
Commutator
Device that reverses current direction each half-turn to keep a motor spinning
EXTRA VOCAB: current (corriente) — flow of electric charge · armature (armadura) — rotating coil in a motor/generator
WRITEFOCUS QUESTIONYour initial thinking
At a science museum you crank a generator handle — no battery, no plug — and an LED lights up. Inside, a magnet spins near a coil of wire. The same principle powers every home on Earth: turbines at power plants spin coils inside massive electromagnets to generate the electricity in your walls.
