TEACHER MONITORING GUIDE
: Synthesis & Assessment: Electricity & Magnetism
NGSS: MS-PS2-3, MS-PS2-5, MS-PS3-2, MS-PS3-5 | Print & carry during stations
PART 1: Synthesis Review (20 pts) | 15 min
LOOK FOR
Look for 1: Students connect magnetic fields (W1) → electromagnetism (W2) → circuits (W3) → motors/MA (W4) as progressive concepts
Look for 2: Students synthesize the unified nature of electromagnetism across all four content weeks
Look for 3: Students explain energy transformation chains from source to end use in complete systems
Look for 4: Students demonstrate vocabulary fluency across the full unit (field, induction, resistance, efficiency, mechanical advantage)
TEACHER NOTES
PART 2: Cumulative Assessment (60 pts) | 40 min | 8 pts manual (DNPG)
LOOK FOR
Look for 1: Section A (Magnetic Fields, 15 pts): Students explain field mapping, force-distance, and pole interactions
Look for 2: Section B (Electromagnetism, 15 pts): Students describe electromagnet variables, induction, and motor/generator duality
Look for 3: Section C (Electric Circuits, 15 pts): Students apply Ohm's Law, calculate power, and explain circuit behavior
Look for 4: Section D (Motors & Generators, 15 pts): Students trace energy transformations and calculate mechanical advantage
TEACHER NOTES
PART 3: Misconception Check (20 pts) | 20 min
LOOK FOR
Look for 1: Students demonstrate corrected understanding of 'magnets have unlimited strength' misconception
Look for 2: Students demonstrate corrected understanding of 'electricity is consumed' misconception
Look for 3: Students demonstrate corrected understanding of 'electricity and magnetism are unrelated' misconception
Look for 4: Students explain WHY each misconception is wrong using evidence from W1-W4 investigations
Look for 5: Two-tier format distinguishes genuine understanding from memorized correct answers

Known Misconceptions
MISCONCEPTION: Magnets have unlimited strength that never weakens
Correct: Magnetic field strength decreases with distance. Electromagnets depend on current, coils, and core. Field strength is measurable and finite.
Intervention: If this persists after 4 weeks, schedule 1:1 re-teach using W1 force-distance data. The student's OWN data showed the inverse relationship.
MISCONCEPTION: Electricity is 'used up' in devices
Correct: Energy is transformed, not consumed. Charge flows in complete circuits. Electrical energy converts to mechanical, thermal, or light energy at each component.
Intervention: If this persists, use the motor-generator demonstration: same device, both directions. Energy transforms but is never created or destroyed.
MISCONCEPTION: Electricity and magnetism are completely separate phenomena
Correct: They are unified as electromagnetism. Current creates magnetic fields (W2 electromagnets). Changing fields create current (W2 induction). All EM technology depends on this unity.
Intervention: If this persists after direct lab evidence (W2), the student may need explicit metacognitive support: 'Your lab showed current creating a field AND a field creating current. What does that tell you about the relationship?'
