Teacher Monitoring Guide
Grade 8 · Cycle 8 · Week 1 — Thermal Conductivity
& Heat Transfer
Learning Goal
Students will analyze thermal conductivity data across materials to
explain and predict heat flow rates, and connect molecular structure to
macroscopic thermal properties in engineering design contexts.
Station Checkpoints
Station 1 — Hook & Phenomenon
Look for: Students connecting the phenomenon to prior knowledge and
generating testable questions
Common misconception: All solids are good conductors — compare metals
(high conductivity) to polymers, wood, and ceramics (low conductivity)
using quantitative data tables
Station 2 — Investigation / Data Collection
Look for: Accurate data recording and identification of emerging
patterns in the evidence
Common misconception: Thermal conductivity and heat capacity measure the
same thing — distinguish conductivity (rate of heat transfer per unit
area per temperature gradient) from capacity (total energy stored per
degree)
Station 3 — Sense-Making
Look for: Students revising their model based on evidence collected
during investigation
Common misconception: Insulators do not transfer heat at all — reinforce
that insulators slow transfer rates but cannot prevent equilibration
given sufficient time

For students scoring below 10 pts on the exit ticket: use the sentence
frames below during the next class's hook.
- "I notice that _____ because _____."
- "The evidence shows _____, which means _____."
