Teacher Monitoring Guide
Grade 8 · Cycle 8 · Week 3 — Year-End Integration & Engineering Showcase

Learning Goal

Students will integrate G8 physics, chemistry, and ecology concepts to design and evaluate an engineering solution to a real-world problem, demonstrating cross-disciplinary scientific reasoning.

Station Checkpoints

Station 1 — Hook & Phenomenon
Look for: Students connecting the phenomenon to prior knowledge and generating testable questions
Common misconception: Engineering is just applied math — emphasize the iterative design process: define criteria and constraints, brainstorm, prototype, test, analyze failure, revise — cycling through multiple times
Station 2 — Investigation / Data Collection
Look for: Accurate data recording and identification of emerging patterns in the evidence
Common misconception: The best design is the most technologically advanced — introduce cost, accessibility, maintainability, and environmental impact as design criteria alongside performance metrics
Station 3 — Sense-Making
Look for: Students revising their model based on evidence collected during investigation
Common misconception: Year-end projects are just for grades — frame the showcase as authentic communication of scientific findings; scientists and engineers routinely present and defend their work to peer audiences
